Rio Ferdinand explains Gareth Southgate’s problem after Jadon Sancho omission
Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand believes Jadon Sancho will be affected mentally after Gareth Southgate omitted him from the latest England squad. The ex-Red Devil feels the forward will have doubts the next time the English manager picks him.
Sancho signed for United in the summer of 2021 from Borussia Dortmund. The 22-year-old was electric in the Bundesliga. However, the England international failed to live up to expectations in his debut season.
Speaking on Vibe (h/t Metro), Ferdinand feels Southgate will have his work cut out to get the best out of Sancho in the Three Lions setup. The defender who spent 12 years at United feels the England manager will have to work on the 22-year-old the next time he makes the squad.
“He’s going to have to work hard. If he gets in the squad now, Gareth Southgate’s going to have to do a lot of work mentally rebuilding him.
“Jadon will be thinking I’ve forced him to put me in here anyway but he isn’t going to play me. And when he does play me he doesn’t really want to play me.
“Those are the thoughts that will go through his head. Mentally he’s a hard one to get back if he ever gets back in the squad.”
Sancho’s first season in a red shirt was not his best. The 22-year-old played 38 times for the Red Devils in the previous campaign, scoring five goals and providing two assists.
However, Sancho seems to have found his feet under Erik ten Hag. The former Dortmund star has played well in recent weeks. The 22-year-old has contributed with some crucial goals. TheFor England international opened United’s account for the 2022/23 season with his strike against Liverpool.
For Southgate, Sancho has not been an essential member of the team even when he was playing well in Germany. The English manager has an abundance of talent up front and the 22-year-old has found it difficult to establish himself in the national side.
During Euro 2020, Sancho started just once. The 22-year-old came on in the final minutes of the final against Italy. Unfortunately, the United star was one of the players who missed in the penalty shootout.
While it must evidently be disappointing for Sancho not to make the national squad, supporters of the Red Devils will be relieved. United face Manchester City next in the Premier League and we need our best players fresh on our visit to Etihad Stadium.
