God bless the youth. At some point, we’ve all wished we were younger – no matter old we actually are. Veteran NBA players perhaps feel this way at times.

Partly, that’s because the youth get different treatment. They deserve it, too. Everyone should be entitled to their youth. After all, it’s not going to last.

The same principles apply to younger NBA players. We’re more willing to overlook their flaws because we see their potential to grow out of them. At the same time, eventually, we have to concede that a player is who they are.

Cam Reddish may be reaching that point. At 23, he still has room to improve, but that room is shrinking on an annual basis.

At the same time, he could be a buy-low candidate – as it stands, the New York Knicks don’t appear to be especially high on him.

Here’s a deal that sends him to the Los Angeles Lakers

Dallas Mavericks Receive: G Kendrick Nunn
New York Knicks Receive: G/F Josh Green, G/F Frank Ntilkina
Los Angeles Lakers Receive: G/F Cam Reddish

On the subject of young players – this deal involves an awful lot of them.

Realistically, there’s a lot of untapped potential in this deal. It involves two lottery picks who, thus far, haven’t lived up to their draft status.

At the same time, at this point, it’s fair to question whether they ever will.

Ironically, Kendrick Nunn, the adult in this room, has probably had the most productive NBA career to date – and he wasn’t a lottery pick. As a matter of fact, he wasn’t drafted at all.

All of which points to the harsh reality of young players – we don’t know what they’ll become. All we can hope to do is make projections, and see if they live up to them.

For example, Reddish was supposed to be a 3-and-D wing with secondary shot-creating abilities. Should the Lakers really gamble on him developing into one in 2022-23?

Why The Los Angeles Lakers Do The Deal

From the Lakers’ perspective, this is about diversifying their portfolio.

After all, this team just acquired Patrick Beverley. Moreover, they just signed Dennis Schroeder – and Lonnie Walker IV before him. When you consider that they still haven’t addressed the Russell Westbrook problem, it’s fair to say that this backcourt is getting crowded.

Even if they do trade Westbrook, they’ll need wings more than they need guards. Granted, Reddish is a risk. Realistically, this is not the solution most Lakers fans likely have in mind ahead of 2022-23. With that said, it could be a gamble that pays incredible dividends.

In the event that Reddish finds his footing, he could be exactly what this team needs. A 3-and-D wing with secondary shot creation skills is exactly the type of player who should thrive alongside LeBron James.

Meanwhile, if he doesn’t work out, they’re only parting with a player who’s likely to get buried in their rotation anyway.

Is he the right player for the Mavericks?

Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal

To be clear, this doesn’t solve every problem in Dallas either. This is not the type of blockbuster deal that aims to fix each team involved – instead, it finds each making marginal improvements at a marginal cost.

The Mavericks, in time, will likely need to find Doncic a co-star. Nunn isn’t that. At the same time, he could contribute towards improving the Mavericks ahead of 2022-23.

For what it’s worth, this team does not currently look better than they did in 2021-22. Losing Jalen Brunson to the Knicks in free agency was a tremendous blow.

Yes, adding Christian Wood will offset some of Brunson’s lost offense, but only some. The Mavericks still need a secondary ball-handler.

Nunn isn’t on Brunson’s level. Still, in the aggregate, losing Brunson to add Wood and Nunn could actually represent an offensive improvement for the Mavs. In any event, they have a vacancy, and Nunn fills it.

Do the Knicks have space for the players they’d be adding here?

Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal

For the Knicks, this is about moving on from a player they’re not using anyway.

Ironically, their unwillingness to play Reddish likely impacted his trade value. By now, his career is on a distinctly downward trajectory. He could improve, but finding a team that’s willing to gamble much on it happening is likely an impossibility.

With that in mind, they’re landing two solid players here. In all likelihood, they’ll both endear themselves to the defensive-minded Tom Thibodeau if nothing else.

In fact, we know Ntilkina will – when he was a Knick, Thibs surely seemed to appreciate his defensive effort.

He’ll appreciate Green’s as well. Neither of these players is likely to pan out as superstars, but they’ll both play hard on both ends of the floor, and earn playing time in New York. At this stage, that’s more than we can say for Reddish.

Best of all, they’re both young enough that they could still improve.
