Dennis Schroder has done the rounds on NBA Twitter. He went from underrated in his first two stints with the Atlanta Hawks and Oklahoma City Thunder to overrated, a natural journey for an talented player who could be a trade asset for a LeBron James-led team.

Schroder’s time with the Lakers was capped off by turning into a meme after turning down a rumored $84 million offer from the Los Angeles Lakers only to sign for the veteran minimum the following summer to back to underrated now after an under-the-radar season suiting up for the Boston Celtics and Houston Rockets.

After not landing a contract he liked last offseason, the German point guard bet on himself by signing a one-year deal with the Boston Celtics to potentially earn the deal he was seeking by contributing to a potential title contender.

While the Cs did establish themselves as a championship-level threat, it wasn’t really until after they dealt him away to a rebuilding Rockets squad that they were able to do so.

Schroder’s bold gambles on himself have yet to pay off, as he’s unlikely to land any kind of significant money now that nearly every team has tied up their available spending money and most of his contemporaries have already inked new deals. It seems that not only have fans begun underrating his two-way play, but front offices have too.

With the right career move and a good campaign next season, he may still be able to earn himself a generational money next summer, though. Here are three of the best potential landing spots for Dennis Schroder:

Miami Heat

Miami Heat

The Miami Heat are one of the few title contenders who don’t have a solidified point guard rotation that they feel great about.

Last year’s solution to that problem, Kyle Lowry, didn’t pan out the way that the Miami Heat hoped. This offseason, it appears that the former champion has gotten himself in shape and fully bought into the Heat culture.

That being said, Miami would be wise to come up with some kind of insurance for the 36-year-old who encountered plenty of injuries last season. Schroder is the perfect fit for their backcourt with his tough-nosed point-of-attack defense and ability to play both on and off of the ball.

Even if Lowry stays healthy and elevates his play, Schroder could be a great option for the Miami Heat off of the bench and could play seamlessly alongside uncovered gem, Gabe Vincent.

The Miami Heat showed that they desperately need more shot creation and another downhill slasher in their Eastern Conference Finals loss to the Boston Celtics, and Schroder would be the perfect plug for that hole in their roster.

Cleveland Cavaliers

Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers could certainly use a steady floor general behind Darius Garland and could even plug Schroder’s two-way talents alongside their star point man in the starting backcourt.

Of course, Schroder’s presence could be redundant if the Cavaliers end up retaining young guard, Collin Sexton, so this fit depends on how that situation pans out.

If the Cleveland Cavaliers end up signing and trading away Sexton then Dennis Schroder could be a perfect addition to their jumbo-sized roster. His point-of-attack defense would be a great asset next to Garland allowing DG to hide on the opponent’s least threatening guard and focus his energy on shot creation.

Having a reliable guard like Schroder would also allow Head Coach J.B. Bickerstaff to slide Caris LeVert to the three where he may be better suited on defense and Lauri Markkanen to the bench to become a supersized sixth man.

Even if Schroder doesn’t start, he could come in off of the bench and replicate the role that Ricky Rubio played for the Cavs early last season before he went down with injury, should the Spaniard point guard not be ready to contribute at a high level following his rehabilitation.

Otherwise, Schroder and Rubio could form a fearsome backcourt tandem off of the pine for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Dallas Mavericks

Dallas Mavericks

Perhaps the most obvious landing spot for Dennis Schroder is with the Dallas Mavericks: a team that has a significant hole to fill left by a primary ball-handler leaving in free agency in Jalen Brunson.

Dennis Schroder can provide 60-90 percent of what Brunson brought to the table last season and for a tiny fraction of what the New York Knicks paid. Schroder would also be a significantly better defender for the Dallas Mavericks.

While Brunson has a little more creativity inside the arc, Schroder can still aptly run an offense and play off of Luka Doncic when needed. He’s also used to playing in a system along with two primary ball-handlers when he featured next to Chris Paul and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Mavericks showed last season that they were closer to title contention with Luka than expected but losing Jalen Brunson could lead to a significant step backward for the team.

Replacing his production with Dennis Schroder could go a long way to ensuring that the Dallas Mavericks don’t regress. With his two-way services under tow and the additions of Christian Wood and Jaden Ivey, the Mavs could even take a step forward if Schroder plays well in North Texas.
