The Spurs Make A Huge Hiring Choice
The San Antonio Spurs are currently in a rebuilding phase.
Actually, they’re not even at that point yet and are currently at the ground level of their next era.
It will be some time before the Spurs are capable of reaching the Finals again and that means there is no better time to make huge structural changes inside the team and coaching staff.
Sure enough, they just added a new assistant coach.
The Spurs have agreed to hire WNBA star Candice Dupree as an assistant on Gregg Popovich’s coaching staff, per @ShamsCharania

The Spurs have hired WNBA star Candice Dupree as an assistant to Gregg Popovich.
During her time in the WNBA, Dupree played for 15 seasons and earned All-Star honors during 7 of those.
She also won a championship with Phoenix while in the WNBA.
It’s obvious that Dupree will bring a lot of knowledge to the Spurs and they’re going to need it.
Dupree is the exact sort of assistant coach who will be great alongside Popovich.
She is a hard worker, a team player, and obviously understands the game.
Popovich has long surrounded himself with coaches who listen well, keep their heads down, follow his lead, and work as a unit.
Some people are already speculating if Dupree will someday replace Popovich as head coach.
It’s no secret that his time in the league is nearing its end and he is thinking about finding an heir to take over the team.
There was a lot of speculation that Becky Hammon would take on that role but she of course moved on to coach the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA and led them to a Finals victory in her first year.
We don’t know what Dupree’s future with the Spurs looks like but she will definitely be a huge help.
